Throw Away Web Tools Help Keep Identity Safe

February 10th, 2008 · No Comments

With the growing number of new web applications available how do you know which are safe enough to sign up for and which are not? Sometimes you just want to quickly sign up and tryout the service before committing your actual identity to whomever is behind the site. Well makeuseof.com has a great article about 5 disposable account types. Email, Phone Number, Log-in Details, Name and Address Generator, and File Sharing. From the makuseof site:

  • Disposable email account - Ever needed to supply your email address to get access to some service you never used before but where reluctant to do so? Mintemail can help by offering Automatic email verification, email forwarding, option to set custom expiry times (from 1 hour to 1 month) and more.
  • Disposable phone number - Numbr basically does as you would think, gives you a throw away phone number that can be forwarded to any cell phone or land-line.
  • Disposable log-in details - A service that a lot of people are no doubt familiar with called BugMeNot gives disposable log-in details (username/password) for a huge number of popular news/review/download websites that normally require users to register.
  • Disposable name and address generator - FakeNameGenerator is a neat little tool that will allow you to create a pretty realistic name and address.
  • Disposable file sharing - This is one of my favorites as I use it all the time. File.io allows users to create a secure drop (essentially a folder) that is available for 30 days and then all the contents are deleted. This is a great service for those times when you want to transfer large files from one machine to another or you want to share photos with a family member for example…

All great tools and definitely worth a visit.
