I’m sure everyone has heard that Google just released the Android SDK. The release of Android is great news for developers as it will allow them to put the latest and greatest mobile apps on your shiny new phone, and hopefully make money (or not depending on their motivation). The market for mobile applications is big right now but is sure to increase by huge numbers in the near future.
Let’s switch gears for a moment. Apple is supposed to be releasing its much anticipated Iphone SDK later this month. Developers will pick one, but which one, or will they choose to develop for both?
Ultimately we’re going to see a trend not so different than that of desktop and web based software, it also depends on the motivation of the developer, commercial vs. open source.
The one area where Iphone SDK will have the advantage in the sense of commercializing (at least early on) is their integration with Itunes, the number of Itunes users is astronomical. How does Google counter Itunes distribution to encourage development on Android, or will developers just begin flocking to it anyway?
Time will tell, but ultimately if I were developing a commercial mobile app, I would choose Apple’s SDK (at least for now).
